I have decided to start blogging directly within my website. This will simplify the whole procedure, removing the need to sign in and out at various locations in order to blog. Apparently it is better for SEO also!

So, in future, my blog posts will be viewable at www.littlelighthouse.com.au under the Menu tab "Blog"!! Things are still being tweeked there, and I hope to incorporate the ability for you to comment on my posts. Please bear with me as I sort it all out in my spare time, LOL!

Personalised lighting

All things personalised is a very popular thing in children's products. For all my searching I couldn't find any personalised lampshades, and thought perhaps it would be a lovely new style in children's lighting. Their popularity has proved this correct!

Our new "Letter Lampshades" have a beautiful embroidered letter on a white background, trimmed with your choice of lovely ribbon. Fully customisable to your child's needs, you can pick the letter colour, ribbon colour, and even change the background fabric if you desire. They make a wonderful, personal gift and are a striking addition in a child's room. Gorgeous Navy!

Navy, a colour with timeless appeal. The colour which complements most other colours, and looks striking all on its own. When we think navy we think beach houses, nautical themes, Ralph Lauren, classic style. Although my home doesn't have much navy (apart from my son's room), having recently made a lovely navy and white striped pendant shade - I have a new love affair with this simple colour. Here is a little salute to the styling of Navy!

The person we are to become is often evident from an early age. Without realising it, we often pursue the interests which shape our later life. As a child I loved my Mum's magazines, Vogue Living, House & Garden, etc. On slow weekends with not much to do, I would take these magazines and scour them for pictures of rooms/objects which I loved, cut out these pictures and design my perfect home. Strange for a young girl? Perhaps, but I loved this past-time! So, I guess I have always had an interest in interior style/colour/design, and that coupled with the time spent in my grandparents soft furnishing business, has probably led me to the work I do today. It hasn't always been obvious to me, it has taken some years for me to find what fulfills me - but thinking back on my childhood memories, it was kind of screaming out at me!

Just lately I have started doing the modern version of cutting pictures out of magazines, which is saving images I love from sites I stumble across! I love seeing how people put rooms together, the colours and textures used, the overall 'feel' of a room. Here are some lovely images which you might enjoy too.

My final message : Listen to your inner voice, it knows you better than anyone.

Peekaboo, I see ME!!

There is a revolution happening in the world of print media, and it goes by the name of Peekaboo Magazine! This new and very popular magazine, started by Bianca Shugg, began as a publication aimed at parents/families in the Brisbane area, showcasing local talent and events. Demand has grown nationally, and in June there will be a Peekaboo Magazine Sydney, and a Peekaboo Magazine Melbourne.

The magazine is available as a hardcopy from local stores, childcare centres, shopping centres, etc (see their Distribution page for places near you), or it can be read online. It has some very interesting articles to suit all tastes and needs.

Little Light House was so very fortunate to be asked to be a part of the March edition, which we eagerly accepted! The March mag has gone to print, and is available now! Check out our story, and the inspiring story of Stacey from Sunny Mummy (shown on the cover), plus a whole lot of other great reads!

You know, I really love what I do - REALLY love it! I've always loved fabrics, the smell, the texture, the colours, the stories they tell (I could go on and on, but I'll spare you!) - so working with fabrics suits me to a 'T'. Designing/making new lampshades satisfies the creative element in me, I get a real buzz out of coming up with new styles and designs (between you and me, I am creating a new range which I am really excited about!!). And being able to do all this whilst at home raising my delightful little children makes it all the more sweeter.

Anyway, this isn't meant to be a self-indulgent rant, the point is that just lately what I do has been appreciated in a more public forum (magazine exposure) and it tickles me pink that some other's love what I do too! Thanks for the support, thanks for the lovely feedback, I'll keep plugging away at what I'm doing, the hard work is worth it! xx

Many is the time I have nursed, cuddled, rocked my babies to sleep (I know, against all the rules!) and with great trepidation lowered them down to their cot only to have those sweet little eyes open along with those loud little lungs! My heart sinks, and the process starts again. Someone needed to come up with a great idea to get babies from arms to cot without disturbing them.

Well, how's this for a clever device? Attach the bassinette to a rocking chair and away you go! No worries about spoiling the baby by having them go to sleep in your arms, and if you are lucky you will nod off to sleep also!

Perhaps a short term fix, but I love the innovative thinker who came up with this piece of furniture - no doubt bleary-eyed in the middle of the night after going through the abovementioned scenario themselves!

Where to buy one, well these ones are called the Rockid from Ontwerpduo. Locally, not sure at the moment - got a handy husband??

Hooray!!! Little Light House will be showcasing our newest fabrics and lampshade styles at the upcoming Mathilda's Market in Brisbane on November 6th!! Come along and see the lovely display of our most popular designs and our latest additions, which we are very excited about.

Some fabrics make me catch my breath, and when this happens I know they are perfect for Little Light House - and these latest ones do exactly that. I hope you'll love them as much as I do. I won't give too much away now, they will be released at this Mathilda's Market.

If you have any lampshades which you would particularly like to see at the MM, then please drop me an email, so I can make sure I have that one on show. We have so many styles now, it is nearly impossible to showcase them all in a market environment.

Red Chair Interiors

It has been my pleasure to recently work with Georgie Oates of Red Chair Interiors. Georgie is an Interior Designer based in Tamworth NSW, and she services that area and its surrounding districts. Georgie loves to go on a mission for her clients in order to find unique and exciting products, products which they are not going to find in any other home close by. "It is all about hand picking the finer details for my clients that will complete their brief, over and above their expectations" says Georgie.

With this in mind, Georgie approached Little Light House about our "Flowers" -Hot Pink lampshade for a client's daughter. The bedlinen was lovely, yet it required something to give it the "Wow" factor. "Flowers" - Hot Pink with its gorgeous colours and silver detail was just the thing. Added to this was one of our new cushions, and as the photo below shows, she created a lovely bedroom for a lucky little girl.

All things birds

Well, my little Emma is 10 weeks old and moving out of her bassinette and into her cot in her own bedroom - gasp, she is growing up, soon she'll be driving!! My nesting instinct has really kicked in, and I am in full decorator mode trying to pretty up the room for a little girl. For some reason I am really drawn to all things birds! Is it because she is my "little chicken"? Is it because I am so "clucky" over her? Whatever the reason my feathers are ruffled (pardon the pun!) over these latest finds which I am adding to her special space!

First stop was My Munchkin Home who have the most delicious wall decals. The above image is the decal chosen for Emma's room, in white, and it looks wonderful!

Secondly, I stumbled across the lovely website www.haveyoumetmissjones.com.au and saw these adorable little china bird houses - mmmm, yes please!

Thirdly, browsing on www.madeit.com.au I found Ernie & Bird who make gorgeous fabric bird mobiles - so cute!

I think it's all coming together nicely, but I am still on the search for those extra special items which catch my eye. It's such fun, there is so much talent out there. Welcome little Emma

Peekaboo Magazine is the brainchild of this Brisbane mother who recognised a need for a classy publication detailing the talents and events on and around Brisbane. Little Posers - divine photography!

Being 28 weeks pregnant, all things 'baby' are on my mind! Whilst browsing the Mathilda's Market website, I came across an incredibly talented Brisbane woman who is specialising in portrait photography of newborns. Lana Bell is the creative force behind Little Posers, and her portfolio of work really made me gasp with delight! She has captured the gorgeousness of babies in their first days of life out of the womb, photos which would be treasured for generations to come. Needless to say, I am in the process of placing a booking with her for when my own little bundle of deliciousness arrives in May.

We mothers are a creative bunch, often not realising our creative potential until motherhood comes along. I know this was the case for me with Little Light House, and it was also the case for Emma Gordon of Jacob & Bonomi . This Australian business specialises in quality, modern designs for children's bed linen. Emma recognised the need for more options in kids' bedding after her son moved from crib to cot and she wasn't given enough choice from the existing brands.

Shown above left is their gorgeous "Tree of Life" single bed doona set (rrp $120), and above right is their delightful "Little Pirate" cot set (rrp $62). I must apologise for my lack of blogging lately! Life has a way of throwing curve balls at us, and we received one not long ago (15 weeks ago to be exact!). My lovely family of four, is now going to be a family of five! To say it took us by surprise is an understatement, however we are blessed to be having another baby (if you overlook the sleepless nights, cracked nipples, etc etc LOL).

So, my lack of blogging has been due to a lack of energy/inspiration - all due to the dreaded morning sickness which has beseiged my life! All my last reserves of energy have been going into completing my orders and running my business and my family.

At 15 weeks I am hopeful to be getting back to 'normal' soon, despite my expanding belly and everything else!!

Does anyone have a cot, pram, car seat, change table, etc etc - we had generously given all our's away to expectant friends! Ha, ha - ah life, ya gotta love it!

In this day and age, where the world can seem quite mad, and there are constant threats around, we need to stop and listen to the simple messages when we come across them. Smiling Planet is one of those little companies that just make you happy with their great products which come with lovely messages. This eco-friendly, mankind friendly business make wonderful earth friendly products for kids, with cute slogans that don't preach, just remind.

I love their t-shirts which state "all the world is wonder full, let's make her smile" featuring an illustrated chain of friendly people and critters around the globe.

Their earth friendly plates contain no BPA, no phthalates, no lead and no toxic inks. Perfect for feeding our precious little earthlings from. They all have cute slogans, my favourite being "make your mother happy" even though they are probably referring to Mother Earth, I'll take all the help I can at meal times!

I am no 'greenie' by any stretch, but was moved by this business and its products, and highly recommend you visit their website also! We've been hacked by 'trojans', battered by 'bots', invaded by 'viruses', which have finally brought us down. Sadly, I must bid farewell to my first, my original Little Light House website. I feel a sense of loss, as we have weathered the trials and tribulations of small business together, coming out triumphant more often than not. Good-bye my faithful friend....

And hello my newest addition!! Coming very soon a slick, new, improved version of the old favourite - I hope you will like it, and forgive it any glitches as it settles in to life in the 'fast' lane!

Well, Mathilda's Market has come and gone - and what a great success it was! Brisbane City Hall was a beautiful venue to hold the upmarket market, and all the stalls were gorgeous in their display of products. Apparently there were about 900 visitors through the doors, which is pretty impressive for this niche market only open between 9am and 1pm! There was a lovely atmosphere from a warm and supportive crowd.

Thanks to everyone who came to visit Little Light House, we had a huge day in every way, and are further inspired to create our gorgeous wares!

Yippie yeah - it's almost here! Not long now and we will be showcasing our wares at Mathilda's Market here in Brisbane. This is a fabulous niche market that offers unique, stylish and affordable baby & kids goods that are lovingly handmade or of limited production. The retailers are hand picked to ensure an exciting product range. You will discover a vast array of funky, unique and gorgeous clothing, wooden letters, canvasses, soft & wooden toys, soft leather shoes, room decor, bags, paintings, etc etc - the list just goes on and on! All this for your little ones..... it is a kid's shopping heaven. Most of the retailers do not have a shop front, so you know you'll find something special on the day.

My new favourite fabric - "Butterfly"

Can you be in love with a fabric?? Ok, then I have really strong feelings for this gorgeous fabric for girls! Depicting colourful butterflies in various stages of flight, surrounded by lovely little flowers, I had to have it and now need to turn it into lampshades in order to bring it to you.

Because the butterflies are quite large, each lampshade will have one big butterfly and some pretty flowers - it will look so fresh and lovely in a little girl's room. We all know how much they adore butterflies!

But what to trim it with? Nothing too busy which would detract from this fabric's impact. I recently found some mini ric-rac in different shades of pink, and I think this frames the butterfly nicely.

Hey presto, here is the finished product, ready to brighten up her room!

It brings me such joy to receive a photograph from a customer showing one of my lampshades in its new setting. I am constantly inspired by the creative flair of my wonderful customers, and really enjoy seeing their different decorating styles.

These gorgeous pictures were sent to me recently. I love the pink/green combination - so fresh and pretty for a little girl's room. The lined baskets are a wonderful idea for storage, and the pink cuddly critter looks beautiful beside our "Candy Stripe" shade. Job well done Gillian, I love your 'inner decorator'!

The internet is a wonderful place, it opens our eyes to so many products and services which we otherwise might never know existed. Hubas is one of those online stores which I came across, and am forever happy I found!

Happy May Day! Break out the Maypoles for the kids, and have some fun!! Does anyone do this anymore? It is a centuries old tradition in celebration of the start of May, when the harsh winter was ending and crops were beginning to grow (in the northern hemisphere of course)!

I love May, I love our cooler weather (in Australia), the autumn leaves falling, spoiling our mothers on Mother's Day, my birthday is in May ........

There are some funny old superstitions about the month of May! Here is a good one :

Apparently, first thing in the morning on May 1st, young girls used to rush out in the garden to wash their faces in the May dew. Why? There is an old tale that says the May dew has magic properties and that anyone who has washed their face in it will have a beautiful complexion all through the year. This dew was supposed to be able to remove freckles and also spots and pimples! (The first 'miracle cream', I wish I was up early this morning!!)

Anyway, have a wonderful May! And to all those mothers, a wonderful Mother's Day on the 10th.

Hable Construction

I am a long-time lover of Hable Construction. I first stumbled across them in 2002 when reading a US decorator magazine. I was just starting out in my business, and they were a relatively new force in the US textiles market. I was quite taken with the Hable sisters' story and their use of the name Hable Construction, which came from their great-grandfather's road construction business. I love an interesting business story with a strong family theme running through it.

This New York based textiles company designs and creates gorgeous textiles and homewares. The sisters, Katharine and Susan, combine their many talents to come up with collections which encompass gorgeous patterns, colours and styles.

They have some lovely storage ideas for kids rooms. Shown here are two of their wool felt storage boxes, which come in a variety of colours and styles.
